Under a grant funded by the Ford Foundation, The National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education (NAFEO) and its strategic partner the University of South Carolina (USC) are piloting a program for faculty who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina from the Gulf Coast region’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) including: Dillard University, Xavier University, Southern University New Orleans (SUNO), Alcorn State University, Jackson State University, and Tougaloo College. The program will pilot a transition fellowship, conduct research and produce a report on the impact of faculty displaced by Katrina and its impact on higher education regionally and nationally, and implement FACNet™ (Faculty Network) at www.facnet.us, a web-based faculty and diversity connector where talent and opportunity meet. The mission of the proposed NAFEO Displaced Faculty Program is to focus on faculty, from the above institutions, who are members of historically underrepresented groups in the professoriate, and understand their experiences and needs while in transition.
