HBCU & PBI Presidents & Chancellors Prepare for 2009 Presidential Peer Seminar & Leadership Enhancement Institute June 24-28, 2009 From June 24 through June 28, 2009 NAFEO, will host the 2009 Presidential Peer Seminar & Leadership Enhancement Institute as part of its membership services. The purpose of the Seminar is to provide presidents and chancellors of the nation’s Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) and Predominantly Black Institutions (PBIs) with information, inspiration, new skills and relationships to enhance their ability to serve at the helm of their institution, meet the many demands of governance, and better serve their communities.
While the details of this year's Peer Seminar are being finalized, the Presidential Peer Seminar generally begins with a Freshmen Presidents’ Leadership Training Institute (Boot Camp) that takes place on the first day of the NAFEO Presidential Peer Seminar. Senior presidents and others conduct workshops, formal and informal discussion groups for freshmen presidents for one full day, then subsequently serve as “on call” Big Brothers and Big Sisters to guide the freshman through the challenges and rewards of serving at the helm of one of America’s HBCUs or PBIs. For the past four years, the HBCU Community has averaged more than ten new presidents annually. To assist the tremendous leaders who are transitining into the top position at an HBCU or PBI, NAFEO began the Freshmen Presidents' Boot Camp three years ago. For three days following the Boot Camp, there are a number of peer-to-peer discussions that vary in topic depending on the expressed interests of the presidents and chancellors. The Peer Seminar also has generally included a Healthy Start Program in the morning, "Peer-to-Peer Palaver," "Commentary and Cocktails," “Lunch and Learn” "The Presidency & Prose," and a NAFEO Spouses’ program. In the past, the presidents and chancellors have invited a select group of corporate, foundation, government and association leaders to join them at the Presidential Peer Seminar. Invitations to non-presidents and chancellors are limited and therefore in high demand because because the Peer Seminar offers a unique opportunity to engage a broad and diverse group of HBCU and PBI presidents and chancellors one-to-one and in small groups for three to four days, in a relaxed setting. Generally, seventy of the HBCU and PBI presidents attend the convening. This year's Presidential Peer Seminar promises to be the best yet. |
