Inaugural Issue of The Black College Review: Research, Policy and Practice

Editors: Kassie Freeman, M. Christopher Brown II, Lenoar (Len) Foster, and James Earl Davis

The editorial board of the new peer-reviewed journal, The Black College Review (BCR) invites submissions for its inaugural issue. Published annually, the purposes of this journal are to enhance our understanding of the roles and functions of historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and to advance the use of research on HBCUs. BCR will cover the landscape of important issues and themes in the study of these colleges. Each issue will explore and analyze structural forces that create and perpetuate the need for, as well as generate challenges for these institutions. Given increased accountability and expectations about the role and effectiveness of higher education, scholarship on HBCUs would help develop and disseminate thoughtful evidence about these institutions and their specific contributions. Articles published in the journal will bring innovative analyses and perspectives on the current and future roles of HBCUs. In addition, BCR will bring greater attention to the study of these colleges in a manner that may inform practice and policy, especially as researchers address issues of access and equity in higher education.

The Black College Review seeks manuscripts that investigate a broad range of contemporary and historical interest incident to HBCUs, their students and personnel, and relevant to broader contexts in which they exist. Articles are encouraged that explore discipline-based approaches that include, but are not limited to social, political, economic, cultural, historical, environmental and global analyses. BCR will advance the articulation of an expanding research agenda on HBCUs and contribute to increasing the knowledge base on these institutions.

Notwithstanding, The Black College Review will prioritize manuscripts that are empirically driven but welcome a broad range of conceptual and theoretical manuscripts that highlight the growing scholarship on Black colleges and also note public concerns about their position, placement and purpose in the future. BCR anticipates that the majority of contributions will report empirical work that is based on sound conceptual frameworks and methodological procedures, and provide useful and significant implications for policy and practice. We encourage manuscripts that are diverse in their disciplinary focus and those that also employ interdisciplinary approaches and methods.

The deadline for authors to submit to the inaugural issue of The Black College Review is April 15, 2008. Manuscripts should be double spaced, APA formatted and not exceed twenty pages (excluding references and tables). Please submit manuscripts electronically as attachments in Microsoft Word to: bcr@sus.edu. Authors who cannot submit via e-mail may forward four copies of their manuscript using postal mail to: The Black College Review, Southern University and A & M College System, J. S. Clark Administration Building, 4th Floor, Baton Rouge, LA 70813
