Against the backdrop of the new release of NAFEO’s 2008 State of America’s Black Colleges, the witnesses will detail, in stark terms, the lack of oversight by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights in enforcing non-discrimination by states in the treatment of its HBCUs, and will reveal the critical role of HBCUs, and offer recommendations as to how the U.S. Congress might help to ensure success of HBCUs.

finalists are especially encouraged to attend and cheer their contestant to

Eleven qualifying student finalists will present their essays to a panel of celebrated writers from diverse genres and vie for four (4) $25,000 awards. The winning students will receive $5,000 toward their tuition and fees; their universities will receive $20,000 for improving student outreach and writing enhancement initiatives.
Students must write compelling essays about how students at HBCUs and PBIs have established a rich tradition of promoting social justice and how current students can flex their political muscle in the 2008 political season.
